The Basic Science Research Institute was established in 1985 to improve the quality of basic science research and interdisciplinary studies. It serves as the hub for basic science in Chungcheong and Daejeon area. To cover the entire field of basic science, it has affiliated research divisions, such as the Division of Mathematics, Division of Statistics, Division of Computer Science, Division of Chemistry, Division of Physics, Division of Life Science, and Division of Earth Science. It annually publishes an academic journal, which includes excellent natural science papers. In addition, it actively promotes basic science research by holding various academic conferences and symposiums over the entire field of basic science. It has been primarily funded by National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF), and other institutions. The Ministry of Education has funded the institute since 1986, starting with research funding in the field of theoretical physics. The funding for research has increased significantly every year.
